| In apology for my long, long, long absence from this site, I gift to thee: Tales of sea (and freshwater) monsters...----On November the second, 1878 in Thimble Tickle, Newfoundland, three fishermen were in a boat not far from shore when they saw a very large object in the whater which they assumed to be part of a shipwreck. As the men neared, however, they discovered it was a large marine animal, a squid. The squid was flailing about and thrashing its tentacles in the ebbing tides that had caused it to get hung up in the shallow water. The men tied a rope around the animal and tied the other end to a tree on shore. As the tide continued to wash out, the squid eventually died. The length of the squid was estimated to be about 20 feet from beak to tail. One tenticle measured 35 feet. Not thinking of scientists or skeptics, they cut the giant squid up and used it for dog meat.----In 1966, two paratroopers on leave from the British Army, Captain John Ridgway and Sergeant Chay Blyth, spent 92 days rowing across the Atlantic ocean on a "self-imposed survival test". On July 25, 1966, just before dawn, with Sergeant Blyth asleep and Captain Ridgway working on "auto-pilot", they made an encounter with something inexplicableAs Captain Rigway later wrote: "I was shocked to full wakefulness by a swishing noise to starboard (right side). I looked out into the water and suddenly saw the writhing, twisting shape of a great creature. It was outlined by the phosphorescence in the sea as if a string of neon lights were hanging from it. It was an enormous size, some 35 or more feet long and it came towards me quite fast. I must have watched it for some ten seconds. It headed straight at me and disappeared right beneath me."----On April 25, 1977, the Japanese fishing vessel Zuiyo Maru brought on board a large carcass that they could not identify. The carcass weight around 4,000 pounds, measured 32 feet, and was observed by at least 18 crewmen. Despite the state of decomposition, it was seen to have a long neck, a fairly long tail, and four fins. Pictures and tissue samples were taken, but the carcass had to be thrown overboard to make more room for their catch of fish.----That's what I have for now. I'm trying to look beyond the Loch Ness Monster and the Ogopogo into more obscure sightings. Hopefully I'll be back with more some time soon. _________________ I'm a slash writer. | I tried my hardest. I'm still doing research on a few more sightings... I didn't mean to be gone so long. Life caught up to me, as it were. =/ But I should be updating this again soon. Hopefully... _________________ I'm a slash writer. And I love every damned second of it.
